Sounds of Freedom

The "Sounds of Freedom" is a collection of audio recordings primarily featuring singing and testimonies recorded during the services at Freedom Baptist Church in Mount Carmel, Tennessee. These recordings were originally recorded at church on cassette tapes, then transfered to computer and burned onto CD's. Many of the same recordings foound in the table above are on these disks.

These CD's are not only good for personal use, but are also great for sharing with family and friends, particularly those wo may not attend church. They make good witnessing tools, as ministry of the gospel through song and testimonly is a proven and effective method of ministry. Often those who are not willing to attend church or even listen to someone talk to them about the gospel will be willing to listen to a CD of gospel music and testimonies.

This collection is constantly growing with a new CD's being made available periodically. They ae always available at Freedom Baptist Church for a modest price to cover material cost. For those who are not able to attend Freedom Baptist Church and would be interested in obtaining one or more of these CD's, they may e-mail me for more information by clicking here.

Vacation Bible School

Vacation Bible School will begin at Freedom Baptist Church in Mount Carmel, Tennessee on Monday June, 16 and will run through Sunday June 22 when the program will be presented for the parents. More details will be given later.

Thought(s) for the Day

God will not guide you if you're not moving.

Do something for Christ's sake!

Been thinking about being saved? Let me help... Hell is terrible, Heaven is wonderful, Hell is the default, and both are eternal. What is there to think about?

Our desire and commitment to Study God's word and attend Sunday School is proportional to our desire to have a close relationship with God.

A wealthy man without Jesus is liken to a man who is on a journey, staying in the most spectacular hotels as he makes his way, but whose permanent home is a rat infested shack in the middle of a garbage dump. The born again child of God with no earthly wealth is linen to a man who is on a journey, staying in the most humble of motels along his way, but whose permanent home is a mansion beyond compare.

A Christian who does not study his/her bible is like a man who has received a million dollars as a gift, yet continues to struggle in financial woes because he will not tap into his bank account.

Quote(s)

We have staked the whole future of American civilization, not upon the power of government, far from it. We have staked the future of all of our political institutions upon the capacity of each and all of us to govern ourselves, to control ourselves, to sustain ourselves according to the Ten Commandments of God.
-JAMES MADISON -

I have found that there are three stages in every great work of God: first, it is impossible, then it is difficult, then it is done."
-Hu dson Taylor-

A good man is not a perfect man; a good man is an honest man, faithful, and unhesitatingly responsive to the voice of God in his life.
-John Fischer-

If a person gets his attitude toward money straight, it will help straighten out almost every other area in his life.
-Billy Grahm-

I don't put my face to the floor for anyone except Jesus Christ.
-Leslie Nease-

Leslie is a Christian radio talk show host in Charlotte, North Carolina. She was also a contestant on the television reality show, "Survivor". She made this comment on the first episode of "Survivor China" (aired September 20th 2007) after she refused to take part in a Buddhist ceremony which involved bowing in a Buddhist temple before a statue of Buddha.

Wisdom is the right use of knowledge. To know is not to be wise. Many men know a great deal, and are all the greater fools for it. There is no fool so great a fool as a knowing fool. But to know how to use knowledge is to have wisdom.
- Charles Haddon Spurgeon-
   English preacher (1834 - 1892)

Words of Wisdom

Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
Proverbs 122:6

Words of Inspiration

Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God. And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
Romans 8:26-28

The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy.
He will not always chide: neither will he keep his anger for ever.
He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.
For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him.
As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.
Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him.
For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust.
As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth.
For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more.
But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children’s children;
To such as keep his covenant, and to those that remember his commandments to do them.
The LORD hath prepared his throne in the heavens; and his kingdom ruleth over all.
Bless the LORD, ye his angels, that excel in strength, that do his commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word.
Bless ye the LORD, all ye his hosts; ye ministers of his, that do his pleasure.
Bless the LORD, all his works in all places of his dominion: bless the LORD, O my soul.
Psalm 103:8-22

Hi Everyone! I'm Carl Light. Welcome to my web site (The Light House). I set this site up as a means for me to share my thoughts and views on a wide range of topics. It is also a place where those who are interested, can get to know me a little better. Those who know me can visit the "Journal" page to view up to date information on various things going on in my life.

Another purpose of this site is to serve as a ministry of the gosple of Jesus Christ. In this capacity, you find articles on a variety of topics pertaining to the Christian faith. These articles are found on the "Writing" page and are divided into four main categories, "Editorials and Commentaries" which are the longer articles, "Random Thoughts" which are usually shorter and less in depth pieces, "True Stories" which are based on my actual life experiences and the spiritual lessons that can be taken from them, and "Other Writers" which are simply a collection of pieces written by people other than myself which I feel has some spiritual lesson or blessing.

On the "Listen to Church Services" page, you can listen to audio recordings of the church services of my home church, "Freedom Baptist Church" of Mount Carmel, Tennessee. New audio is added to this page periodically so keep checking for new additions. There are two links for each service. One is for listening immeadiately without downloading and the other is for downloading and saving.

On the "Listen to Testimonies and Singing" page, you can listen to extractions of church services focused only on people testifying and singing.

On the "Sunday School" page, you can read the Sunday School lessons I prepare for the Men's Sunday School class that I teach on Sunday Mornings.

This site will also serve as a testing ground for me. As I continue to learn more about web site design and develop new skills, I will try them out here first. Therefore, this site will constantly be changing, at least for the foreseeable future.

Faith - How We Measure Up

Faith - How We Measure Up

My thought today has been on "Faith", particularly in how we all measure up to God’s standard of how strong our faith should be. In a nut shell, we all fall terribly short! Some may say, "Now hold on there a minute!, I know some very strong Christians who have exceptional faith." I don’t doubt that, but what standard do we often use to measure where we are with God? Not only in faith, but in so many other things, we often don’t look to God’s word for the standard, but have a tendency to compare ourselves with one another.

If we were to put a rating scale on faith of from 1 to 10 with 10 representing God’s standard, many of us may have a faith value of only 1 or 2. Those few who may have a faith value of lets say 4 would certainly seem to have great faith in the eyes of their Christian brothers and sisters because they have twice or more the faith of most everyone else. Yet on God’s scale they don’t even reach the half way mark.

Why do I think we are often so far off the standard since we don’t have a "faith meter" mounted on us? Well there are two things that cause me to think this way,

  1. The way we behave
  2. Comparing the faith I see in God’s word that the saints had in those days with what I see in us now.

Let me say right now that I am not judging anyone. I include myself when I say that most of the time our faith is short of what it ought to be. Just because I write on what I believe is correct or good or righteous, it is by no means suggestive that I believe that I measure up any more than the person that reads what I have written. In fact I believe in many ways I am weaker than many of my brothers and sisters in Christ.

On the way we behave: Here is an illustration of what I mean when I refer to our behavior revealing our level of faith – We often will get on our knees and pray for a loved one’s healing, salvation, etc… and we get up with the "hope" that our prayer will be answered. If at a later time that person gets healed or saved we will rejoice and praise God for answering our prayers.

However, I believe that perfect faith would cause us to rejoice and praise God the second we got off our knees, "before" the prayer was answered because we "knew" that although the prayer may not be answered yet, it will be answered in God’s own time.

You see, God’s word tells us plainly that He will give us the desires of our hearts. His word tells us that we can ask anything in His name and it will be given to us. These are promises given to us by Almighty God who can not lie. If we truly believed those promises with perfect faith we could rejoice the minute we asked God for something. We would not have to wait to see if God would answer.

But what about those times when our faith is not perfect as described here and yet our prayers are answered? Well, you may not be the only one praying. Perhaps someone who truly does have the faith to have power with God and has that perfect faith has had "their" prayers answered. You see I am not saying that no one in this day has absolute faith. I believe some do. I am writing here on the faith that I believe most of us have, or don’t have I should say. Even those who may have this perfect faith to have power with God may not have it on a consistent basis. I believe this is why we are told in God’s word to bare one another’s burdens and pray for one another. Out of a group of people praying, there may be one or two who have the faith which is strong enough for God to move on.

If we had perfect faith I believe we could rejoice in the moment we asked and then when the prayer was answered our joy would then be solemn and we would not act as though we had just received a wonderful big surprise. With perfect faith, we would be expecting the prayer to be answered so the joy would be like getting your paycheck at the end of the week which is different than receiving an unexpected bonus. You can start appreciating the blessing of a paycheck while you are laboring because you expect that paycheck at the end of the week. We don’t labor and then hope to be paid and when that paycheck comes rejoice because our employer chose to pay us for this week. We expect that our employer will be faithful and just, so we don’t worry during the week if we will be paid for our work. If we can have this much faith in our employer, shouldn’t we have even greater faith in our Lord?

On the old Saints of the bible: Peter slept sound the night before he was scheduled to be executed. Would we have the faith to do that? David had the faith to fight a giant armed with a sword and armor though he had no armor and was armed only with a sling shot. Would we have the faith to do that? Abraham was ready to plunge a dagger into his son whom he dearly loved believing that God would have to raise him up again since this was the promised son through which a mighty nation would be born. Would we have the faith to do that? Three Hebrew children willingly entered a fiery furnace believing there Lord was able to deliver them. Would we do that? Caleb was promised a mountain in his youth and then in old age was ready to war with a mighty army to take that mountain believing he could do it because God had made him that promise. Would we be willing to do the same?

I could write on and on of great examples of faith given in the bible, none of which is comparable to the watered down faith most of us have today.

Praise the Lord we do see exceptions even in this day! I have known of people being cured from terminal diseases. I have seen the most unlikely people receive Christ as their savior. If all of us could get a grasp on real, true, absolute faith and quit hoping and start knowing, we could be a mighty force by and for the glory of God in this spiritual warfare.

Sunday School Attendence

On Sunday morning around 10 A.M. a small group gathers at our church for Sunday School. I teach the men's class and on the days that I have four students to show up it is considered a full class since those four make up the regular attendees. The women's class usually has a few more than the men's and the other classes ar small as well. Then just before 11:00 A.M. people begin coming in for the worship service.

I realize that some people have legitimate reasons for not attending Sunday School, but I believe most simply choose not to attend. I believe that if a person is able to attend the 11"00 worship service, they are most likely able to attend Sunday School which begins only one hour earlier. So what's the big deal about attending Sunday School? Isn't it enough to simply attend church? I'm so glad you asked! Let me give you my thoughts on why Sunday School is so important..

Teaching and preaching are two different things and they each serve a purpose. As a Christian it is important that we grow spiritually. It is important to have spiritual growth because that is the only way that we can adequately serve the Lord. I'm afraid that many Christians have forgotten or have never realized that as children of God that we are to serve Him. We were not saved simply to occupy a pew on Sunday mornings. The bible says we have been bought with a price and we are not our own.

What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20

We use the phrase, "Our Lord and Savior" very loosely. Most seem to understand the "savior" part of that phrase but give too little thought to the meaning of the "Lord" portion. Lord is a title representing sovereign authority. Therefore if we say Christ is our Lord and Savior, we are not only saying that He has redeemed us, but that He is also our ruler, our master and we are His servents commited to do His will.

Not only are we to be His servent, but we are to also be his representatives.

Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God.
2 Corinthians 5:20

An ambassador is someone who is stationed in one country while representing another country. Jesus said that we (Christians) are the light of the world. This means that we are to let others see Christ and all his teachings in us.

There are many ways that we can serve and represent Christ in our lives. Some are called to preach, others are called to teach, to sing, or some other service. Regardless of how a person serves, it all works together for the common task of winning lost souls to Christ. One calling that we all have in common is to be a witness for Christ. We witness not only through our testimony and our counsel, but also by our praise and life of obedience to Him.

We can not serve in any capacity however, without understanding of His word. We can not teach what we do not know and we can not share what we do not have. We can not walk in obedience if we do not know what is expected of us. Without understanding of God's word we are spiritually blind and not in a position to serve Him or be a light for others.

Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.
Matthew 15:14

It is by acquired knowledge that we have spiritual sight and are thereby able to lead the spiritualy blind to Christ. For a biblical perspective on the connection between ignorance and darkness or blindness and the connection between knowledge and light or spiritual site, consider the following scriptures:

For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
2 Corinthians 4:6

This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, 18Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:
Ephesians 4:17-18

Taken from the lyrics of a song by Tanya Tucker...

You can't be a guiding light if you walk around blind,
and you can't be a beacon if your light don't shine.

A final biblical reference to the importance for a Christian having spiritual knowledge...

My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.
Hosea 4:6

We acquire this spiritual knowledge through the study of God's word. Reading God's word is good, but studying it is better. Studying means we take the time to puposely be attentive to each verse and if we do not understand it, we make special efforts to obtain that understanding by looking up the definitions of words that we do not understand, we look at the study notes in our bible pertaining to that verse, we look at the reference scriptures that may be provided, and we search for comentaries which elaborate on that particular scripture.

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
Psalm 119:105

Sunday School is a good resource for gaining understanding of God's word. Many times the Sunday School teacher has already done some of the work listed above in his/her preperation for the class. Sometimes we simply need someone else to explain the meaning of scripture to us. Phillip encountered a man once who was reading scripture and when Phillip asked him if he understood what he was reading, he answered "not unless someone teaches me."

And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest? And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.
Acts 8:30-31

Another reason to learn all that we can about God's word and His teachings is that we are held responsible for keeping his commandments (works). We will give an acccount of our Christian life at the Judgement Seat of Christ. We will be judged according to how we lived in accordance with God's word. If we will be judged according to how we lived in accordance with Word of God, does it not make perfect since that it would be to our great benefit to know what is in God's word and have an understanding of it so that we may fare better in the day of judgement?

For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.
2 Corinthians 5:10

Some people attend Sunday School and some people don't,
Some people will fare well on Judgement Day and some people won't.
If there's any doubt of the connection between these two,
We'll be judged from the same book that we study in Sunday School.

We see from God's word that it is very important for a Christian grow in understanding of God's word. We also see that knowledge can be gained through the study of God's word and even more so when study is accompanied by counsel of teaching. There is one more issue regarding Sunday School atttendence that I would like to address here and it pertains to the condition of the heart.

At the beginning of this piece the questions, "So what's the big deal about attending Sunday School? Isn't it enough to simply attend church?" were addressed directly in terms of the necessity of spiritual growth for adequately serving our Lord. However, its not all about fulling our Christian obligations nor to do these things solely out of obiedience. We ought to do them willingly even if they were not commanded of us, simply out of the love we have for God. Does it not make good sense that if you love someone, you want to know more about them. Does it not make sense that if you love someone you will want to please them. God is pleased with our obiedience, but He wants us to obey Him not only out of fear and obligation, but also out of love.

If ye love me, keep my commandments.
John 14:15

He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.
John 14:21

If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.
John 15:10

If we truly love the Lord, we will desire to know Him and to know about Him. If we then desire to know Him, we will desire to read and study His word. If we desire to study His word, we will attend Sunday school when we have the oppertunity. It is an unbroken chain. If the first link is there, the rest will present also. If we are in fellowship with God and we love Him, attending Sunday School will not be burdden, nor will it be seen as an obligation, but rather it will be seen as a blessing and it will b something that we look forward to.

E-mail Forwards

Most of us get them whether we want them or not. I suppose some folks delight in both sending and receiving forwards. As for myself and a few others I know however, they are with few exceptions a great annoyance. To those who enjoy sending and receiving forwards I suppose that statement seems very anti-social or even down right unfriendly, but that is far from the truth. Let me explain by giving a few reasons why I personaly do not enjoy them.

They are impersonal
I have friends and family scattered all over this country. Some of them I only see every few years and others I never see at all. E-mail correspondence is a great way to stay in touch and helps to maintain those close ties. I love to hear from them from time to time, but almost every e-mail I receive from them is a forward and contains nothing personally from them. What I want to hear from them is something about how their life is going. I want to hear about their accomplishments, their woes, and their prayer requests. I want them to share some of what is on their heart. I am genuinely interested in how their life is going; not from a meddling perspective, but simply because I care. I wouldn't even mind receiving a forward from them from time to time if I also received something personally from them once in a whale. So you see, my attitude about e-mail forwards is not an anti-social attitude at all.

Most e-mail forwards are repeats
Many of these forwards have been passed around for years. It seems I get the same ones over and over again. Not that I like NEW ones, but I dislike receiving the 'repeats' even more.

Many e-mail forwards are bogus
Not all e-mail forwards are of the "social call" variety. A great number of them are in the form of a warning of some sort. Sometimes they warn us about a virus being passed along through e-mail, or about a product that is dangerous, or about a scam that is going around. While I certainly appreciate being warned about such things when they are real, the fact is that the majority (a very large majority) of these warnings are simply hoaxes. While the internet is a vast source of usable and reliable information, it is also true that a lot of what is on the internet is untrue. It is fairly easy to check out this type of forward to determine if it is a hoax. There are several web sites that list them. A few of these web sites are:

hoax busters.com

About.com - e-mail hoaxes

and here's one that tells how to spot an e-mail hoax.

About.com - How to spot an e-mail hoax

Another type of hoax is the one that plays on peoples sense of compassion. An example would be an e-mail that tells a story of a child that has been severely injured or is very sick. The e-mail goes on to explain that for every forward of this e-mail that is sent, some organization will donate a certain amount of money to help this child and their family. These type of e-mails are always a hoax. First of all no organization donates money for a cause based on a number of e-mails that get forwarded. Even if they wanted to do that, there is no way that they could possibly know how many e-mails were forwarded and even if they had the capability they most likely would not have the resources to monitor such a thing. If an organization wants to donate money, they will donate it period. Why would they determine the amount to donate based on the number of e-mails that are forwarded even if they could monitor such a thing. It doesn't make sense.

Another type of e-mail hoax is the e-mail petition. E-mail petitions are as useless as the imaginary paper they are written on. They have absolutely no legal basis. In fact, forwarding an e-mail petition is a good way to have your e-mail service terminated for violating the server's rules regarding forwarding e-mail chan letters. For more information on e-mail petitions, click here.

Blessings and Curses
Perhaps you've seen these e-mails that promise great blessings (often financial blessings) as a reward to forwarding an e-mail to a certain number of people OR a promise of a terrible curse for NOT forwarding the e-mail. I shouldn't even have to write about this, because everyone except the most naive of people surely understand how ridiculous these claims are. As a Christian I know that God is in control of my blessings and my chastisements. I also know that my blessings and chastisements are based on my obedience or disobedience to him.

The Shame Strategy
Of all the reasons I dislike forwards this one is at the top of my list! I'm talking about those e-mails that challenge my love and loyalty to my Lord and Savior based on my decision of whether or not to forward an e-mail. I have saved a couple of these for examples to show here. Below are two closings of actual e-mails that I have received in the past.

THIS IS A SIMPLE TEST.... If you believe that God is alive and well, send this to at least ten people and the person that sent it to you!!!!!!!!
This is so true.
Sometimes it's the simplest things that God asks us to do that cause us, if we are obedient to what He's asking, to be able to hear. His voice more clear than ever. Please listen, and obey! It will bless you (and the world). Phil 4:13
This is an easy test - you score 100 or zero. It's your choice.

If you aren't ashamed to do this, please follow the directions. Jesus said, "If you are ashamed of me, I will be ashamed of you before my Father."

Not ashamed...Pass this on

For those that prefer to think that God is not watching over us...
go ahead and delete this.
For the rest of us...pass this on.

My shamelessness of my Lord is not demonstrated in sending an e-mail. It is demonstrated in living for Him each day and allowing His light to shine through me in all that I say and do or don't say and do. If a person wants Christ to show in their life, they can life a dedicated uncompromising fife for Christ before this world. Give thanks for your for your food in public as well as in private. Be faithful in church attendance by attending EVERY service that you can including Sunday School and mid week services. Praise His name openly before both the lost and the saved. Allow the Holy Spirit to guide you in every aspect of your life, even in the coices of music and videos that you listen to. Make choices that reflect purity in your life and that give Him honor and glory. Be a cheerful giver to the church and other charities. Don't complain over your hardships, but instead rejoice that you are not going through them alone and that you have a better day to look forward to. Witness to others about Christ. Find a work to do in serving the Lord. Let the love of God be shed abroad in your heart that others may see that there is definitely something special about the love within a child of God. Do it all with humility, giving God the praise for any good that others may see in you.

How shallow a person's understanding must be to believe that choosing to forward or not to forward an e-mail is an indication of a person's relationship with God. Ironically, it seems that a person who thanks this way, are themselves lacking in the very things they accuse others of in these e-mails.

And these are some of the reasons that I do not like e-mail forwards.

Ye must be born again.
