Trusting One Master

(Matthew 6:24-34)

This Sunday School less on is on “Trusting One Master” (Jesus). Just from the title we can see that there are two distinct points in this lesson.

  1. Trust the Lord

  2. Trust ONLY in the Lord

This lesson builds on the previous lesson of “Materialism and Priorities”.

Consider verse 24.

No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
(Matthew 6:24)

A person can not have but one top priority in life. There is no such thing as top prioritie(s). Nothing is equal or greater than our Lord. God’s ways are far above the ways of the world, therefore we can not cling to both. This is why we are instructed to separate ourselves from the world.

Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.
(1 Corinthians 6:14-18)

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
(Romans 2:2)

We can not please the world while pleasing God, and we can not please God while pleasing the world. If we are striving to please the world, then the world is our master and not God. If we follow God, the world will persecute us. If we follow the world, then we face the judgement of God. Which one is worse? Consider the following scripture.

And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
(Matthew 10:28)

If God is truly the top priority in our life, it will show in our life beyond the mere testimony that God is the top priority in our life. If God is our top priority, then it will be reflected in how we spend our time, the choices we make, and in our service and obedience to Him as revealed in His word.

Fellowship with God not only requires that we hold Him at the top of our priorities, but it also requires that we trust Him to take care of all our needs.

Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?
(Matthew 6:25-26)

If a man owns a business and feels that he can not afford to close his shop on Sunday to attend church, then neither is his priorities in order nor is he trusting in God to supply all his needs.

For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
(Matthew 16:26)

The verse above addresses priorities about as directly and straight forwardly as it can be addressed and it puts materialism in its place.

But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
(Philippians 4:19)

The versus below illustrate God’s own priorities regarding His creation. The message is that if God takes care of the least of what He has made, He will surely take care of that which He has placed above the rest and even more so.

Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.
(Matthew 6:27-34)

Trusting in the Lord, not only means that we rely on Him for supplying all of our needs, but it also means that we trust Him and only Him for showing us through his teachings and guidance of the Holy Spirit how we are to live our lives righteously and in obedience to Him. There are many false religions, false prophets, false teachings, and false doctrines in the world today. Any of these that are contrary to teachings of God’s Word are corrupt and not acceptable to God.

For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 4And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
(2 Timothy 4:3-4)

Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.
(Matthew 7:15-20)

And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.
(Matthew 24:11)

For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall show great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.
(Matthew 24:24)

But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.
(2 Peter 2:1)

Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
(1 John 4:1)

I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: 7Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. 8But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. 9As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.
(Galatians 1:6-9
)

All the above scriptures warn us about false prophets, doctrines and teachers. Many of them are specifically describing the last days which we are in right now according to the description of the last days found in God’s word. This is a reason to be well studied in God’s word, so that we will recognize false teachings.

God Bless you,
Carl
